Features of Zuni, Hopi & Navajo Jewelry
Every piece of Native American jewelry at Wind River Trading Company is handcrafted by artisans using techniques that have been passed down through the generations. The quality of the craftsmanship is evident in the details of the piece. Some pieces feature unique hand-stamped patterns, detailed silver work around a center stone, or an intricate mosaic of inlaid stones. Each piece is also made of the highest quality materials, including sterling silver, 14k Gold and various gemstones.
The Zuni tribe is located in northwestern New Mexico. The Zuni’s are thought to be direct descendants of the Anasazi’s. Their Jewelry is typically characterized by intricate stones cut and set in sterling silver. The main styles are categorized as needle point, petit point, or inlay. Zuni work is very detailed, delicate and extremely time consuming. Many Zuni pieces today are smaller and more contemporary in style compared to traditional Navajo jewelry.
Turquoise and coral are among the stones primarily used in Zuni jewelry. In addition to turquoise and coral early, Zuni artists use many different stones and shells to integrate in their inlay work such as lapis, jet, malachite, mother of pearl and spiny oyster shell.
The Navajo Nation, also known as the Diné Nation, is the largest Native American tribe in the United States. The Navajos were the first indigenous people of the southwest to work with silver. Many of their techniques, designs and styles were learned from the Spanish.
Traditional Navajo jewelry features intricate hand stamped plain silver work or large stones of organic shapes set into sterling silver. Today Navajo artists create a wide range of styles of jewelry, including traditional styles and also contemporary inlay work too.
